Choices

When you start your business you may have a solid 5 year plan with an optional 7 year exit strategy, but you won’t tend to have many choices. You will have a limited budget and limited hours in the day so your main priority will be spreading the word and generating sales. Your choices will revolve around what combination of time and budget to spend in what activities to maximise sales.

Move out of the “start up” phase, you have enough sales to finance the business and you are looking to expand. Your main choices then will revolve around the hiring of more people, and who you invest time any money in will have a massive impact on the future of your company. The right people choices will make your company fly, the wrong choices will make your life a chore.

The more successful you get the more choices will be presented to you.

In the early days you may take any work, when you are successful you have the luxury of turning down work and cherry picking the best.
In the early days you may have to employ who is available, when you are successful great people will want to work with you.
In the early days you will attend the opening of an envelope in order to network, when you are successful you will be invited to present to people of influence.

Achieving business success is the result of amalgamating every little choice you make along the way, so make sure whenever you are presented with a choice have the end game in sight, it will make the decision so much easier.
